I cross the Green Mountain
I sit by a stream
Heaven blazin' in my head
I dreamt a monstrous dream
Somethin' came up
Out of the sea
Swept through the land of
The rich and the free

I look into the eyes
Of my merciful friend
And then I ask myself
Is this the end?
Memories linger
Sad yet sweet
And I think of the souls
In heaven who will meet

Altars are burnin'
The flames far and wide
The foal has crossed over
From the other side
They tip their caps
From the top of the hill
You can feel them come
More brave blood to spill

Along the dim
Atlantic line
The ravaged land
Lasts for miles behind
The lights comin' forward
And the streets are broad
All must yield
To the avenging God

The world is old
The world is gray
Lessons of life
Can't be learned now a day
I watch and I wait
And I listen while I stand
To the music that comes
From a far better land

Close the eyes of our Captain
Peace may he know
His long night is done
The great leader is laid low
He was ready to fall
He was quick to defend
Killed outright he was
By his own men

It's the last day's last hour
Of the last happy year
I feel that the unknown
World is so near
Pride will vanish
And glory will rot
But virtue lives
It cannot be forgot

The bells
Of evening have rung
There's blasphemy
On every tongue
Let 'em say that I walked
In fair nature's light
And that I was loyal
To truth and to right

Serve God and be cheerful
Look upward beyond
Beyond the darkness that masks
The surprises of dawn
In the deep green grasses
And the blood stained wood
They never dreamed of surrendering
They fell where they stood

Stars fell over Alabama
And I saw each star
You're walkin' in dreams
Whoever ya are
Chilled are the skies
Keen is the frost
And the ground's froze hard
And the mornin' is lost

A letter to mother
Came today
Gunshot wound to the breast
Is what it did say
But he'll be better soon
He's in a hospital bed
But he'll never be better
He's already dead

I'm ten miles outside the city
And I'm lifted away
In an ancient light
That is not of day
They were calm they were gloomed
We knew 'em all too well
We loved each other more than
We ever dared to tell

Cross The Green Mountain

The song alludes to the Civil War. The song's music video was produced for the movie God's and Generals.

This is one of the most beautiful sounding songs ever sung or recorded. The poetic and prophetic blend into a moving work of art.
There is a careful translation of the Bible that gives a more accurate rendering of the familiar biblical phrase "the Lord of hosts." It is "the Lord who commands armies." Ponder that as you listen carefully to the song.

Our Chief Commander, our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, was a steady bulwark to many who died in the Civil War. The faith then was pronounced in ways not as common today. The arrogant separatistic squabbling of "Church" and "State" was not common, either. The spiritual vein of "Gospel truth" ran through much of culture in writing, conversation, and song. It was a given not even considered for serious debate.

THE RECORD

God is our strong refuge;
he is truly our helper in times of trouble.
For this reason we do not fear.

The Lord who commands armies is on our side!
The God of Jacob is our protector! (Selah)

He brings an end to wars throughout the earth;
he shatters the bow and breaks the spear;
he burns the shields with fire.
He says, “Stop your striving and recognize that I am God!
I will be exalted over the nations!
I will be exalted over the earth!”

The Lord who commands armies is on our side!
The God of Jacob is our protector! (Selah)

Psalm 46

O Lord, the God who avenges!
O God who avenges, reveal your splendor!
Rise up, O judge of the earth!
Pay back the proud!
O Lord, how long will the wicked,
how long will the wicked celebrate?
They spew out threats and speak defiantly;
all the evildoers boast.

Psalm 94:1-4

I know that the Lord defends the cause of the oppressed
and vindicates the poor.
Certainly the godly will give thanks to your name;

the morally upright will live in your presence.

Psalm 140:12-13

For your husband is the one who made you –
the Lord who commands armies is his name.
He is your protector, the Holy One of Israel.
He is called “God of the entire earth.”

Isaiah 54:5

In the first year of King Belshazzar of Babylon, Daniel had a dream filled with visions while he was lying on his bed. Then he wrote down the dream in summary fashion. Daniel explained: “I was watching in my vision during the night as the four winds of the sky were stirring up the great sea. Then four large beasts came up from the sea; they were different from one another.

After these things, as I was watching in the night visions a fourth beast appeared – one dreadful, terrible, and very strong.

Daniel 7:1-3, 7

Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.

Matthew 5:7

I tell you, people will be forgiven for every sin and blasphemy, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven.

Matthew 12:31

But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, because he is kind to ungrateful and evil people. Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.

Luke 6:35-36

In him was life, and the life was the light of mankind. And the light shines on in the darkness, but the darkness has not mastered it.

“For if such things are done when the wood is green, what will happen when it is dry?”
Two other criminals were also led away to be executed with him. So when they came to the place that is called “The Skull,” they crucified him there, along with the criminals, one on his right and one on his left. But Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing.”

Luke 23:31-34

The true light, who gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world was created by him, but the world did not recognize him. He came to what was his own, but his own people did not receive him. But to all who have received him – those who believe in his name – he has given the right to become God’s children.

John 1:4, 9-12

For I consider that our present sufferings cannot even be compared to the glory that will be revealed to us. For the creation eagerly waits for the revelation of the sons of God. For the creation was subjected to futility – not willingly but because of God who subjected it – in hope that the creation itself will also be set free from the bondage of decay into the glorious freedom of God’s children. For we know that the whole creation groans and suffers together until now. Not only this, but we ourselves also, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we eagerly await our adoption, the redemption of our bodies.

Romans 8:18-23

My commandment is this – to love one another just as I have loved you. No one has greater love than this – that one lays down his life for his friends.
John 15:12-13

Therefore, if you have been raised with Christ, keep seeking the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Keep thinking about things above, not things on the earth.

Colossians 3:1-2

And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord will destroy by the breath of his mouth and wipe out by the manifestation of his arrival. The arrival of the lawless one will be by Satan’s working with all kinds of miracles and signs and false wonders, and with every kind of evil deception directed against those who are perishing, because they found no place in their hearts for the truth so as to be saved. Consequently God sends on them a deluding influence so that they will believe what is false. And so all of them who have not believed the truth but have delighted in evil will be condemned.

II Thessalonians 2:8-12

But understand this, that in the last days difficult times will come. For people will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, unloving, irreconcilable, slanderers, without self-control, savage, opposed to what is good, treacherous, reckless, conceited, loving pleasure rather than loving God.

II Timothy 3:1-4

They aspire to a better land, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore, God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.

Hebrews 11:16

Children, it is the last hour, and just as you heard that the antichrist is coming, so now many antichrists have appeared. We know from this that it is the last hour.

I John 2:18

Then I saw a beast coming up out of the sea. It had ten horns and seven heads, and on its horns were ten diadem crowns, and on its heads a blasphemous name.

And the whole world followed the beast in amazement; they worshiped the dragon because he had given ruling authority to the beast, and they worshiped the beast too, saying: “Who is like the beast?” and “Who is able to make war against him?” The beast was given a mouth speaking proud words and blasphemies, and he was permitted to exercise ruling authority for forty-two months. So the beast opened his mouth to blaspheme against God – to blaspheme both his name and his dwelling place, that is, those who dwell in heaven. The beast was permitted to go to war against the saints and conquer them. He was given ruling authority over every tribe, people, language, and nation, and all those who live on the earth will worship the beast, everyone whose name has not been written since the foundation of the world in the book of life belonging to the Lamb who was killed. If anyone has an ear, he had better listen!
