How long can I stay in this nowhere café
'fore night turns into day
I wonder why I'm so frightened of dawn
All I have and all I know
Is this dream of you
Which keeps me living on

There's a moment when all old things
Become new again
But that moment might have come and gone
All I have and all I know
Is this dream of you
Which keeps me living on

I look away, but I keep seeing it
I don't want to believe, but I keep believing it
Shadows dance upon the wall
Shadows that seem to know it all

Am I too blind to see, is my heart playing tricks on me
I'm lost in the crowd
All my tears are gone
All I have and all I know
Is this dream of you
Which keeps me living on

Everything I touch seems to disappear
Everywhere I turn you are always here
I'll run this race until my earthly death
I'll defend this place with my dying breath

From a cheerless room in a curtained gloom
I saw a star from heaven fall
I turned and looked again but it was gone
All I have and all I know
Is this dream of you
Which keeps me living on

This Dream Of You

Is this song about a lady? It seems to place someone on a level beyond all that when you carefully observe his words.

Take the first six lines. You can lose a loved one in some way and it can be devastating, but over time and help you come to understand the loss even as pain remains. Memories of that very special person can ease the grief, and the stages of grief do come, and you go through them. But here he sings of a dream of someone, the sort of dream with expectation attached to it because it's the thing that gives purpose and a reason to live. He dreams of this person in relation to the future; something said or promised from that person. If not, why a dream with hope? Who could that person be?

From that person is certainty and a solid foundation and promise for the future. It's all he has and knows, this dream or anticipation of something yet to be from someone. Only the Lord Jesus can provide such a Solid Rock foundation. He remembers him. Doubts and fears and shadows may assail, still he knows his footing in this relationship will remain right up until the threshold is crossed into eternity when he goes to be with him.

Now take the last six lines. In the midst of gloom he looks up to heaven. Could it be this one he dreams of appearing? Not this time. Not yet. Still he lives on with faith and a dream of hope in the one he knows will not disappoint. He keeps him living on.

The Lord answered me and put me in a wide open place.

Psalm 118:5

Psalm 139:11-12

Hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

Romans 5:5

For now we see in a mirror indirectly, but then we will see face to face. Now I know in part, but then I will know fully, just as I have been fully known. And now these three remain: faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of these is love.

I Corinthians 13:12-13

So then, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; what is old has passed away – look, what is new has come!

II Corinthians 5:17

We wait for the happy fulfillment of our hope in the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Titus 2:13

Now faith is being sure of what we hope for, being convinced of what we do not see.

Moreover, we possess the prophetic word as an altogether reliable thing. You do well if you pay attention to this as you would to a light shining in a murky place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.

II Peter 1:19

“I, Jesus, have sent my angel to testify to you about these things for the churches. I am the root and the descendant of David, the bright morning star!” And the Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” And let the one who hears say: “Come!” And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who wants it take the water of life free of charge.

The one who testifies to these things says, “Yes, I am coming soon!” Amen! Come, Lord Jesus! The grace of the Lord Jesus be with all.
