All the early Roman kings
In their sharkskin suits
Bow ties and buttons
High top boots
Drivin' the spikes in
1
Blazin' the rails
Nailed in their coffins
In top hats and tails
Fly away, little bird
2
Fly away, flap your wings
Fly by night
Like the early Roman kings

All the early roman kings
In the early, early morn'
Coming down the mountain
Distributing the corn
Speeding through the forest
Racing down the track
You try to get away
They drag you back
Tomorrow is friday
We'll see what it brings
3
Ev'rybody's talking
'Bout the early roman kings

They're peddlers and they're meddlers
They buy and they sell
4
They destroyed your city 5
They'll destroy you as well
They're lecherous and treacherous
Hell bent for leather
Each of 'em bigger
Than all men put together
Sluggers and muggers
Wearing fancy gold rings
All the women goin' crazy
For the early Roman kings

I can dress up your wounds
With a blood clotted rag
6
If you see me comin'
And you're standing there
Wave your handkerchief
In the air
7
I ain't dead yet
My bell still rings
I keep my fingers crossed
Like them early roman kings

I can strip you of life
Strip you of breath
Ship you down
To the house of death
One day
You will ask for me
There'll be no one else
That you'll wanna see
8
Bring down my fiddle
Tune up my strings
I'm gonna break it wide open
Like the early roman kings

I was up on black mountain
The day Detroit fell
They killed 'em all off
And they sent 'em to hell
9
Ding Dong Daddy
You're coming up short
10
Gonna put you on trial
In a
Sicilian Court
I've had my fun
I've had my flings
Gonna shake 'em all down
Like the early roman kings

Early Roman Kings

While various translations may not use the word, in the Bible, corn is the general word for grain of all kinds. The Romans thrived on it as they oppressed Israel.

The Romans first called the Land Palestine just to infuriate the Jews (who had earlier conquered the Philistines). So, that’s the origin of that name. The origin and continuity of the name Israel, well . . . you can start in Genesis 12 and move well into the New Testament.

“The Romans killed many Jews and sold many more in slavery. Some of those who survived still alive and free left the devastated country, but there was never a complete abandonment of the Land. There was never a time when there were not Jews and Jewish communities, though the size and conditions of those communities fluctuated greatly.”

From the
Sicilian Court comes this poetic expression. Is it about the lady on the album cover?

I have a place
in my heart
for God reserved,
So that I may
go to Heaven,
To the Holy Place where, I have heard,
People are always happy and joyous
and merry.
I wouldn't want
to go there
without my lady,
The one with fair hair and pale complexion,
Because without her
I could
never be happy
Being separated
from my lady.
But I do not
say that with blasphemous intent,
As if I wanted
to sin with her:
If I did not see her shapely figure
And her
beautiful face
and tender look:
Since it would
greatly comfort me
To see my woman shine . . . in glory.

THE RECORD

1 For the Lord who rules over all has brought blessing to his flock, the house of Judah, and will transform them into his majestic warhorse. From him will come the cornerstone, the wall peg, the battle bow, and every ruler.

Zechariah 10:3-4

1 This man, who was handed over by the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, you executed by nailing him to a cross at the hands of Gentiles. But God raised him up, having released him from the pains of death, because it was not possible for him to be held in its power.

Acts 2:23-24

1 So when they came to the place that is called “The Skull,” they crucified him there, along with the criminals, one on his right and one on his left.

Luke 23:33

2 I will throw my bird net over them while they are flying,
I will bring them down like birds in the sky;
I will discipline them when I hear them flocking together.

Hosea 7:12

2 Ephraim will be like a bird;
what they value will fly away.

Hosea 9:11

2 "They will return in fear and trembling
like birds from Egypt,
like doves from Assyria,
and I will settle them in their homes," declares the Lord.

Hosea 11:11

3 He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then he took it down, wrapped it in a linen cloth, and placed it in a tomb cut out of the rock, where no one had yet been buried. It was the day of preparation (Friday) and the Sabbath was beginning.

Luke 23:52-54

4 When they had crucified him, they divided his clothes by throwing dice.

Matthew 27:35

5 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those who are sent to you! How often I have longed to gather your children together as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you would have none of it! Look, your house is left to you desolate! For I tell you, you will not see me from now until you say, "Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord!"

Matthew 23:37-39

5 Now as Jesus was going out of the temple courts and walking away, his disciples came to show him the temple buildings. And he said to them, “Do you see all these things? I tell you the truth, not one stone will be left on another. All will be torn down!”

Matthew 24:1-2

5 Now when Jesus approached and saw the city, he wept over it, saying, “If you had only known on this day, even you, the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. For the days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment against you and surround you and close in on you from every side. They will demolish you – you and your children within your walls – and they will not leave within you one stone on top of another, because you did not recognize the time of your visitation from God.”

Luke 19:41-44

6 Then they crucified him and divided his clothes, throwing dice for them, to decide what each would take.

Mark 15:24

7 Then we who are alive, who are left, will be suddenly caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will always be with the Lord.
I Thessalonians 4:17

8 Now the poor man died and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried. And in hell, as he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far off with Lazarus at his side. So he called out, "Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in anguish in this fire." But Abraham said, "Child, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things and Lazarus likewise bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in anguish. Besides all this, a great chasm has been fixed between us, so that those who want to cross over from here to you cannot do so, and no one can cross from there to us." So the rich man said, "Then I beg you, father – send Lazarus to my father’s house (for I have five brothers) to warn them so that they don’t come into this place of torment." But Abraham said, "They have Moses and the prophets; they must respond to them." Then the rich man said, "No, father Abraham, but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent." He replied to him, "If they do not respond to Moses and the prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead."

Luke 16:22-31

9 You snakes, you offspring of vipers! How will you escape being condemned to hell?

Matthew 23:33

10 They die in their youth, and their life ends among the male cultic prostitutes.

Job 36:14

10 Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived! The sexually immoral, idolaters, adulterers, passive homosexual partners, practicing homosexuals, thieves, the greedy, drunkards, the verbally abusive, and swindlers will not inherit the kingdom of God. Some of you once lived this way. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

I Corinthians 6:9-11

11 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him, because all that is in the world (the desire of the flesh and the desire of the eyes and the arrogance produced by material possessions) is not from the Father, but is from the world. And the world is passing away with all its desires, but the person who does the will of God remains forever.

I John 2:15-17
