I'm gonna walk across the desert 'til I'm in my right mind
I won't even think about what I left behind
1
Nothin' back there anyway I can call my own
Go back home, leave me alone
1
It's a long road, it's a long and narrow way
If I can't work up to you,
you'll surely have to work down to me someday
2

Ever since the British burned the White House down
There's a bleeding wound in the heart of town
I saw you drinking from an empty cup
3
I saw you buried and I saw you dug up
It's a long road, it's a long and narrow way
If I can't work up to you,
you'll surely have to work down to me someday
2

Look down, Angel, from the skies
Help my weary soul to rise
4
I kissed your cheek, I dragged your plow
You broke my heart, I was your friend 'til now
It's a long road, it's a long and narrow way
If I can't work up to you,
you'll surely have to work down to me someday
2

In the courtyard of the golden sun
You stand and fight, or you break and run
You went and lost your lovely head
For a drink of wine and a crust of bread
5
It's a long road, it's a long and narrow way
If I can't work up to you,
you'll surely have to work down to me someday
2

We looted and we plundered on distant shores
Why is my share not equal to yours?
6
Your father left you, your mother, too
Even death has washed his hands of you
7
It's a long road, it's a long and narrow way
If I can't work up to you,
you'll surely have to work down to me someday
2

This is hard country to stay alive in
Blades are everywhere, and they're breaking my skin
I'm armed to the hilt, and I'm struggling hard
You won't get out of here unscarred
8
It's a long road, it's a long and narrow way
If I can't work up to you,
you'll surely have to work down to me someday
2

You got too many lovers wailing at the wall
If I had a thousand tongues, I couldn't count them all
Yesterday I could've thrown them all in the sea
Today even one may be too much for me
9
It's a long road, it's a long and narrow way
If I can't work up to you,
you'll surely have to work down to me someday
2

Cakewalking baby, you can do no wrong
Put your arms around me, where they belong
I want to take you on a roller coaster ride
Lay my hands all over you, tie you to my side
10
It's a long road, it's a long and narrow way
If I can't work up to you,
you'll surely have to work down to me someday
2

I got a heavy stacked woman with a smile on her face
And she has crowned my soul with grac
10
I'm still hurting from an arrow that pierced my chest
I'm gonna have to take my head and bury it between your breasts
11
It's a long road, it's a long and narrow way
If I can't work up to you,
you'll surely have to work down to me someday
2

Been dark all night, but now it's daw
12
The moving finger is moving on
13
You can guard me while I sleep
Kiss away the tears I weep
14
It's a long road, it's a long and narrow way
If I can't work up to you,
you'll surely have to work down to me someday
2

I love women, and she loves men
We've been to the West, and we're going back again
I heard a voice at the dusk of day
Saying, "Be gentle brother, be gentle and pray"
15
It's a long road, it's a long and narrow way
If I can't work up to you,
you'll surely have to work down to me someday

Narrow Way

Note the repetition. It's at the end of every verse. It can't be stressed enough. Jesus told us to enter through the narrow gate, because the gate is wide and the way is spacious that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it. But the gate is narrow and the way is difficult that leads to life, and there are few who find it.

There's no way in the world a person can be declared justified or righteous in God's sight by their own good works or religion or spirituality. The chasm is too broad and we all fall miserably far short. We are guilty of and as guilty as sin. You can't work up to God. You can only hope He will work His way down into your heart. But then He's willing to enter at a moment's notice. All you have to do, and can do, is open your heart to Jesus, the Son of God, and the work already accomplished in His death on the cross and His resurrection from the grave for you.

No wonder it's a narrow way. People just can't get it. They can't get the gift of forgiveness and eternal life by their own doing. God paid the price in the sacrifice of His own dear Son for you. Now you, if you've never done so, must receive the gift of Jesus into your heart. You must believe on His Name from your heart. Salvation is a gift by grace, unmerited favor. If it were by works then grace would no longer be grace and you'd remain stuck miserably far short of the glory of God. You would be doomed for all eternity. But thank God for His indescribable gift in Jesus.

Those early believers were commended for the way they kept looking for God's Son to come from heaven, Jesus, whom He raised from the dead,
who rescues us from the wrath to come.

"About the Time of the End, a body of men will be raised up who will turn their attention to the Prophecies, and insist upon their literal interpretation, in the midst of much clamor and opposition."

THE RECORD

1 The Lord found him in a desolate land,
in an empty wasteland where animals howl.
He continually guarded him and taught him;
he continually protected him
like the pupil of his eye.

Deuteronomy 32:10

1 Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, there is no one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for my sake and for the sake of the gospel who will not receive in this age a hundred times as much – homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children, fields, all with persecutions – and in the age to come, eternal life. But many who are first will be last, and the last first.”

Mark 10:29-31

2 Enter through the narrow gate, because the gate is wide and the way is spacious that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it. But the gate is narrow and the way is difficult that leads to life, and there are few who find it.

Matthew 7:13-14

2 Then Jesus traveled throughout towns and villages, teaching and making his way toward Jerusalem. Someone asked him, “Lord, will only a few be saved?” So he said to them, “Exert every effort to enter through the narrow door, because many, I tell you, will try to enter and will not be able to. Once the head of the house gets up and shuts the door, then you will stand outside and start to knock on the door and beg him, ‘Lord, let us in!’ But he will answer you, ‘I don’t know where you come from.’ Then you will begin to say, ‘We ate and drank in your presence, and you taught in our streets.’ But he will reply, ‘I don’t know where you come from! Go away from me, all you evildoers!’ There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth when you see Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and all the prophets in the kingdom of God but you yourselves thrown out. Then people will come from east and west, and from north and south, and take their places at the banquet table in the kingdom of God. But indeed, some are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last.”

Luke 13:22-30

2 Jesus replied, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."

John 14:6

2 For Moses writes about the righteousness that is by the law: “The one who does these things will live by them.” But the righteousness that is by faith says: Do not say in your heart, Who will ascend into heaven?’” (that is, to bring Christ down) or “Who will descend into the abyss?” (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith that we preach), because if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and thus has righteousness and with the mouth one confesses and thus has salvation. For the scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.”

Romans 10:5-11

2 Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world may be held accountable to God. For no one is declared righteous before him by the works of the law, for through the law comes the knowledge of sin. But now apart from the law the righteousness of God (which is attested by the law and the prophets) has been disclosed – namely, the righteousness of God through the faithfulness of Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. But they are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus. God publicly displayed him at his death as the mercy seat accessible through faith. This was to demonstrate his righteousness, because God in his forbearance had passed over the sins previously committed. This was also to demonstrate his righteousness in the present time, so that he would be just and the justifier of the one who lives because of Jesus’ faithfulness.

Where, then, is boasting? It is excluded! By what principle? Of works? No, but by the principle of faith! For we consider that a person is declared righteous by faith apart from the works of the law.
Or is God the God of the Jews only? Is he not the God of the Gentiles too? Yes, of the Gentiles too! Since God is one, he will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through faith. Do we then nullify the law through faith? Absolutely not! Instead we uphold the law.

Romans 3:19-31

2 But now, freed from sin and enslaved to God, you have your benefit leading to sanctification, and the end is eternal life. For the payoff of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 6:22-23

2 For people everywhere report how you welcomed us and how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, Jesus our deliverer from the coming wrath.

I Thessalonians 1:9-10

2 The one who testifies to these things says, “Yes, I am coming soon!” Amen! Come, Lord Jesus!

Revelation 22:20

3 You prepare a feast before me
in plain sight of my enemies.
You refresh my head with oil;

my cup is completely full.

Psalm 23:5

4 For you have taken refuge in the Lord,
my shelter, the sovereign One.
No harm will overtake you;
no illness will come near your home.
For he will order his angels
to protect you in all you do.
They will lift you up in their hands,
so you will not slip and fall on a stone.

Psalm 91:9-12

5 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats from this bread he will live forever. The bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.

John 6:51

5 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after giving thanks he broke it, gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat, this is my body.” And after taking the cup and giving thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you, for this is my blood, the blood of the covenant, that is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins."

Matthew 26:26-28

6 The Lord delivers and vindicates me!
I fear no one!
The Lord protects my life!
I am afraid of no one!

When evil men attack me
to devour my flesh,
when my adversaries and enemies attack me,
they stumble and fall.
Even when an army is deployed against me,
I do not fear.
Even when war is imminent,
I remain confident.
I have asked the Lord for one thing –
this is what I desire!
I want to live
in the Lord’s house
all the days of my life,
so I can gaze at the splendor of the Lord
and contemplate in his temple.
He will surely give me shelter
in the day of danger;
he will hide me in his home;
he will place me
on an inaccessible rocky summit.
Now I will triumph
over my enemies who surround me!
I will offer sacrifices in his dwelling place
and shout for joy!
I will sing praises to the Lord!
Hear me, O Lord, when I cry out!
Have mercy on me and answer me!
My heart tells me to pray to you,
and I do pray to you, O Lord.
Do not reject me!
Do not push your servant away in anger!
You are my deliverer!
Do not forsake or abandon me,
O God who vindicates me!

Even if my father and mother abandoned me,
the Lord would take me in.

Teach me how you want me to live;
lead me along a level path
because of those who wait to ambush me!
Do not turn me over to my enemies,
for false witnesses who want to destroy me
testify against me.
Where would I be if I did not believe
I would experience the Lord’s favor

in the land of the living?
Rely on the Lord!
Be strong and confident!
Rely on the Lord!

Psalm 27

7 Now when this perishable puts on the imperishable, and this mortal puts on immortality, then the saying that is written will happen,
Death has been swallowed up in victory.
Where, O death, is your victory?
Where, O death, is your sting?
The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ!
So then, dear brothers and sisters, be firm. Do not be moved! Always be outstanding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.

I Corinthians 15:54-58

7 Guard against self-deception, each of you. If someone among you thinks he is wise in this age, let him become foolish so that he can become wise. For the wisdom of this age is foolishness with God. As it is written, “He catches the wise in their craftiness.” And again, “The Lord knows that the thoughts of the wise are futile.” So then, no more boasting about mere mortals! For everything belongs to you, whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world or life or death or the present or the future. Everything belongs to you, and you belong to Christ, and Christ belongs to God.

I Corinthians 3:18-23

8 They strengthened the souls of the disciples and encouraged them to continue in the faith, saying, “We must enter the kingdom of God through many persecutions.”

Acts 14:22

8 Finally, be strengthened in the Lord and in the strength of his power. Clothe yourselves with the full armor of God so that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world rulers of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavens. For this reason, take up the full armor of God so that you may be able to stand your ground on the evil day, and having done everything, to stand. Stand firm therefore, by fastening the belt of truth around your waist, by putting on the breastplate of righteousness, by fitting your feet with the preparation that comes from the good news of peace, and in all of this, by taking up the shield of faith with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. With every prayer and petition, pray at all times in the Spirit, and to this end be alert, with all perseverance and requests for all the saints.

Ephesians 6:10-18

8 Be sober and alert. Your enemy the devil, like a roaring lion, is on the prowl looking for someone to devour. Resist him, strong in your faith, because you know that your brothers and sisters throughout the world are enduring the same kinds of suffering. And, after you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace who called you to his eternal glory in Christ will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. To him belongs the power forever. Amen.

I Peter 5:8-11

9 But I ask, have they not heard? Yes, they have: Their voice has gone out to all the earth, and their words to the ends of the world. But again I ask, didn’t Israel understand? First Moses says, I will make you jealous by those who are not a nation; with a senseless nation I will provoke you to anger.” And Isaiah is even bold enough to say, “I was found by those who did not seek me; I became well known to those who did not ask for me.” But about Israel he says, All day long I held out my hands to this disobedient and stubborn people!

Romans 10:18-21

9 I ask then, they did not stumble into an irrevocable fall, did they? Absolutely not! But by their transgression salvation has come to the Gentiles, to make Israel jealous. Now if their transgression means riches for the world and their defeat means riches for the Gentiles, how much more will their full restoration bring?

Romans 11:11-12

10 Who can find a wife of noble character?
For her value is far more than rubies.
The heart of her husband has confidence in her,
and he has no lack of gain.

She brings him good and not evil
all the days of her life.

Proverbs 31:10-12

11 Drink water from your own cistern
and running water from your own well.

Should your springs be dispersed outside,
your streams of water in the wide plazas?
Let them be for yourself alone,
and not for strangers with you.

May your fountain be blessed,
and may you rejoice in your young wife;
a loving doe, a graceful deer;
may her breasts satisfy you at all times,
may you be captivated by her love always.

Proverbs 5:15-19

12 Love does no wrong to a neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law. And do this because we know the time, that it is already the hour for us to awake from sleep, for our salvation is now nearer than when we became believers. The night has advanced toward dawn; the day is near. So then we must lay aside the works of darkness, and put on the weapons of light.

Romans 13:10-12

13 As they drank wine, they praised the gods of gold and silver, bronze, iron, wood, and stone. At that very moment the fingers of a human hand appeared and wrote on the plaster of the royal palace wall, opposite the lampstand. The king was watching the back of the hand that was writing. Then all the color drained from the king’s face and he became alarmed. The joints of his hips gave way, and his knees began knocking together. The king called out loudly to summon the astrologers, wise men, and diviners. The king proclaimed to the wise men of Babylon that anyone who could read this inscription and disclose its interpretation would be clothed in purple and have a golden collar placed on his neck and be third ruler in the kingdom.

Daniel 5:4-7

13 In the first year of King Belshazzar of Babylon, Daniel had a dream filled with visions while he was lying on his bed. Then he wrote down the dream in summary fashion.

Daniel 7:1

13 "Now I have come to help you understand what will happen to your people in the latter days, for the vision pertains to future days."

Daniel 10:14

13 I heard, but I did not understand. So I said, “Sir, what will happen after these things?” He said, “Go, Daniel. For these matters are closed and sealed until the time of the end. Many will be purified, made clean, and refined, but the wicked will go on being wicked. None of the wicked will understand, though the wise will understand. From the time that the daily sacrifice is removed and the abomination that causes desolation is set in place, there are 1,290 days. Blessed is the one who waits and attains to the 1,335 days. But you should go your way until the end. You will rest and then at the end of the days you will arise to receive what you have been allotted."

Daniel 12:8-13

14 "I will not abandon you as orphans, I will come to you."

John 14:18

14 Your conduct must be free from the love of money and you must be content with what you have, for he has said, I will never leave you and I will never abandon you.” So we can say with confidence, The Lord is my helper, and I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?

Hebrews 13:5-6

14 I am exhausted as I groan;
all night long I drench my bed in tears;
my tears saturate the cushion beneath me.

Psalm 6:6

14 You keep track of my misery.
Put my tears in your leather container!
Are they not recorded in your scroll?

Psalm 56:8

14 He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death will not exist any more – or mourning, or crying, or pain, for the former things have ceased to exist.

Revelation 21:4

15 But reject foolish and ignorant controversies, because you know they breed infighting. And the Lord’s slave must not engage in heated disputes but be kind toward all, an apt teacher, patient, correcting opponents with gentleness. Perhaps God will grant them repentance and then knowledge of the truth and they will come to their senses and escape the devil’s trap where they are held captive to do his will.

II Timothy 2:23-26

15 I, therefore, the prisoner for the Lord, urge you to live worthily of the calling with which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, making every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you too were called to the one hope of your calling, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.

Ephesians 4:1-6

15 With every prayer and petition, pray at all times in the Spirit, and to this end be alert, with all perseverance and requests for all the saints.

Ephesians 6:18

15 See that no one pays back evil for evil to anyone, but always pursue what is good for one another and for all. Always rejoice, constantly pray, in everything give thanks. For this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. Do not extinguish the Spirit.

I Thessalonians 5:15-19
