Should my heart not be humble
Should my eyes fail to see
Should my feet sometimes stumble
On the way, stay with me
1

Like the lamb that in springtime
Wanders far from the fold
Comes the darkness and the frost
I get lost
I grow cold
2

I grow cold, I grow weary
And I know I have sinned
And I go seeking shelter
And I cry in the wind
3

Though I grope and I blunder
And I’m weak and I’m wrong
Though the road buckles under
Where I walk, walk along
4

Till I find to my wonder
Every path leads to Thee
All that I can do is pray
Stay with me
Stay with me
5

Stay With Me

1 Who speaks that way these days? Main streamers won’t. Late nighters don’t. The spirit and attitude is few and far between even in the reams of search results. Who wants to know if one’s heart is humble or if they stumble in these hard times? That’s hard as in hardened. It’s a proud race, this one race of man.

2 Spring is a time of year when expectations seem real and the senses are refreshed; why leave? Why drift? There’s an agitation and frustration from an inner dissatisfaction even nature’s best cannot calm. Toward the colder, toward the bitter, toward the dark experiences is that drift with the allusion the numbing effect will suffice as the deadening balm. A love of darkness does that.

This Entry:

Some years ago the captain of a Greenland whaling vessel found himself at night surrounded by icebergs and “lay-to” till the morning, expecting every moment to be ground to pieces. As the morning dawned he sighted a ship at no great distance. Getting into a boat with some of his men he carefully picked his way through the lanes of open ice towards the mysterious looking craft. Coming alongside he hailed the vessel with a loud, “Ship ahoy!” but there was no response. He looked through the porthole and saw a man, evidently the captain, sitting at a table as if writing in a log-book. He again hailed the vessel, but the figure moved not. It was dead and frozen! On examination the sailors were found, some frozen among the hammocks, others in the cabin. From the last entry in the log-book it appeared this vessel had been drifting about the Arctic seas for thirteen years--a floating sepulchre, manned by a frozen crew. And there are souls to-day who have refused the Divine offer of life, forsaken the centres where they were warmed with hallowed influences, and drifted into the chilling regions of Arctic darkness and frost. Many of these have certain appearances of Christian life, and a name to live. (Christian Journal.)

3 But knowing where you are, suddenly sensing your senses can lead to the turning. The wind becomes something for you, not against you, it lifts you and frees you. Listening to the still, quietness, power, truth of His voice brings assurance of shelter and deliverance.

4 No one ever said this would be easy. We all should understand that. It’s where the ruggedness can lead our understanding, the way it can infuse our courage, and the hope instilled that never disappoints.

5 A living hope, an unconditional love filling the heart from a supernatural source, and with it all a satisfied mind. No wonder Jesus taught how He alone came to give life and life more abundantly. There is a wonder in knowing Him, His presence, this One who said He would never leave you or forsake you, ever.

THE RECORD

1 A person’s pride will bring him low,
but one who has a lowly spirit will gain honor.

Proverbs 29:23

For we all stumble in many ways. If someone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect individual, able to control the entire body as well.

James 3:2

Jesus replied, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

John 14:6

Remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.

Matthew 28:20

2 All of us had wandered off like sheep;
each of us had strayed off on his own path,
but the Lord caused the sin of all of us to attack him.

Isaiah 53:6

What do you think? If someone owns a hundred sheep and one of them goes astray, will he not leave the ninety-nine on the mountains and go look for the one that went astray?
And if he finds it, I tell you the truth, he will rejoice more over it than over the ninety-nine that did not go astray. In the same way, your Father in heaven is not willing that one of these little ones be lost.

Matthew 18:12-14

I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either cold or hot! So because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold
, I am going to vomit you out of my mouth! Because you say, “I am rich and have acquired great wealth, and need nothing,” but do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind, and naked, take my advice and buy gold from me refined by fire so you can become rich! Buy from me white clothing so you can be clothed and your shameful nakedness will not be exposed, and buy eye salve to put on your eyes so you can see! All those I love, I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest and repent! Listen! I am standing at the door and knocking! If anyone hears my voice and opens the door I will come into his home and share a meal with him, and he with me. I will grant the one who conquers permission to sit with me on my throne, just as I too conquered and sat down with my Father on his throne. The one who has an ear had better hear what the Spirit says to the churches.

Revelation 3:16-22

I am numb with pain and severely battered;
I groan loudly because of the anxiety I feel.
O Lord, you understand my heart’s desire;
my groaning is not hidden from you.
My heart beats quickly;
my strength leaves me;
I can hardly see.

Psalm 38:8-10

3 I want to do what pleases you, my God.
Your law dominates my thoughts.
I have told the great assembly about your justice.
Look! I spare no words!
O Lord, you know this is true.
I have not failed to tell about your justice;
I spoke about your reliability and deliverance;
I have not neglected to tell the great assembly
about your loyal love and faithfulness.
O Lord, you do not withhold your compassion from me.
May your loyal love and faithfulness continually protect me!
For innumerable dangers surround me.
My sins overtake me
so I am unable to see;
they outnumber the hairs of my head
so my strength fails me.
Please be willing, O Lord, to rescue me!
O Lord, hurry and help me!

Psalm 40:8-13

“Do you people think that I am some local deity
and not the transcendent God?” the Lord asks.
“Do you really think anyone can hide himself
where I cannot see him?” the Lord asks.
“Do you not know that I am everywhere?”
the Lord asks.

Jeremiah 23:23-24

Now this is the gospel message we have heard from him and announce to you: God is light, and in him there is no darkness at all. If we say we have fellowship with him and yet keep on walking in the darkness, we are lying and not practicing the truth. But if we walk in the light as he himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say we do not bear the guilt of sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous, forgiving us our sins and cleansing us from all unrighteousness. If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar and his word is not in us. (My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin.) But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous One, and he himself is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for our sins but also for the whole world. Now by this we know that we have come to know God: if we keep his commandments.

1 John 1:5-2:3

4 I am dazed and completely humiliated;
all day long I walk around mourning.

Psalm 38:6

Do you not know?
Have you not heard?
The Lord is an eternal God,
the Creator of the whole earth.
He does not get tired or weary;
there is no limit to his wisdom.
He gives strength to those who are tired;
to the ones who lack power, he gives renewed energy.
Even youths get tired and weary;
even strong young men clumsily stumble.
But those who wait for the Lord’s help
find renewed strength;
they rise up as if they had eagles’ wings,
they run without growing weary,
they walk without getting tired.

Isaiah 40:28-31

5 When I look up at the heavens,
which your fingers made,
and see the moon and the stars, which you set in place,
Of what importance is the human race,
that you should notice them?
Of what importance is mankind,
that you should pay attention to them,
and make them a little less than the heavenly beings?
You grant mankind honor and majesty.

Psalm 8:3-5

I relied completely on the Lord,
and he turned toward me
and heard my cry for help.

He lifted me out of the watery pit,
out of the slimy mud.
He placed my feet on a rock
and gave me secure footing.
He gave me reason to sing a new song,
praising our God.
May many see what God has done,
so that they might swear allegiance to him
and trust in the Lord!
How blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord
and does not seek help from the proud or from liars!
O Lord, my God, you have accomplished many things;
you have done amazing things
and carried out your purposes for us.
No one can thwart you!
I want to declare them and talk about them,
but they are too numerous to recount!

Psalm 40:1-5

Jesus replied, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life.
No one comes to the Father except through me.

John 14:6

Your conduct must be free from the love of money and you must be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you and I will never abandon you.” So we can say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper, and I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?”

Hebrews 13:5-6
