Gonna Change My Way of Thinking (Alternate Version)
Words and music by Bob Dylan

as performed by Bob Dylan and Mavis Staples, on
Gotta Serve Somebody: The Gospel Songs of Bob Dylan (Sony/Columbia 2003)
These changes had to do with Bob's spiritual growth and maturity, not a reinvention.

Change my way of thinking, make myself a different set of rules
Change my way of thinking, make myself a different set of rules
Put my best foot forward, stop being influenced by fools 1

I'm sittin' at the welcome table, I'm so hungry I could eat a horse

I'm gonna revitalize my thinking, gonna let the law take it's course

I'm all dressed up, I'm going to the county dance

Gonna Change My Way Of Thinking

The left says this. The right says that. The middle ground thinks their cool. All seek to self-justify. That doesn't satisfy. Complete change is needed even if the whole world thinks it's weak or stupid. I will go to the light. I will see who the fools really are. I can try to influence them, but if they're stuck and don't want to move, I will move on.

A lot of them offer what does not fill the void. I have power not dependent on their law that only fuels death.

Now I see the words that tell me how to live and know what is life indeed. Before this I was a lifeless lump of clay. Now what moves me to truth purer than gold is that somehow, someone most important has said I am a living stone, precious as a jewel in his sight. It's hard to believe at times because I am weak. I am a child. But then I remember it is that humble recognition that enables me to believe my destiny is completely of his unearned favor anyway. I recall his love. It is beyond any universal scale a human can try to perceive, from one end of the universe to the other. On top of all this, I can expect the full realization of what I am to him, any day; any moment, really.

Jesus took me off the wide dark road and set me on the steady straight and narrow track. It takes me to the light and now I own what bound me before and it does not own me. I am glad about the way I look now. The music is clear, too. I still have got to pray to hear which decision to make and remember that even the best of us have stumbled in a variety of ways. His light is always surrounding me which enables me to be honest about the stumble, to believe his promises of forgiveness, and not keep kicking myself. Then I discover the stumbling can actually become less and less. This is freedom the others don't offer.

Storms will assail high and low, no matter where I go. It's part of the preparation process. A lump of coal goes through what it does to become a diamond. But then there is something solid and pure and it lasts forever. He is always at my side to remind and give strength.

So, these are truths. Don't listen to the fools.

THE RECORD

1 Do not be conformed to this present world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may test and approve what is the will of God – what is good and well-pleasing and perfect.

Romans 12:2

1 For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and I will thwart the cleverness of the intelligent.” Where is the wise man? Where is the expert in the Mosaic law? Where is the debater of this age? Has God not made the wisdom of the world foolish? For since in the wisdom of God the world by its wisdom did not know God, God was pleased to save those who believe by the foolishness of preaching. For Jews demand miraculous signs and Greeks ask for wisdom, but we preach about a crucified Christ, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles. But to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength. Think about the circumstances of your call, brothers and sisters. Not many were wise by human standards, not many were powerful, not many were born to a privileged position. But God chose what the world thinks foolish to shame the wise, and God chose what the world thinks weak to shame the strong. God chose what is low and despised in the world, what is regarded as nothing, to set aside what is regarded as something, so that no one can boast in his presence. He is the reason you have a relationship with Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification and redemption, so that, as it is written, Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord."

I Corinthians 1:18-31

2 I am the Lord, your God,
the one who brought you out of the land of Egypt.
Open your mouth wide and I will fill it!

Psalm 81:10

2 For the law of the life-giving Spirit in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and death.

Romans 8:2

2 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ!

I Corinthians 15:56-57

3 So as you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but chosen and priceless in God’s sight, you yourselves, as living stones, are built up as a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood and to offer spiritual sacrifices that are acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.

I Peter 2:4-5

3 For we tell you this by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will surely not go ahead of those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord himself will come down from heaven with a shout of command, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive, who are left, will be suddenly caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will always be with the Lord.

I Thessalonians 4:15-17

3 Treat others in the same way that you would want them to treat you.

Luke 6:31

4 Enter through the narrow gate, because the gate is wide and the way is spacious that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it. But the gate is narrow and the way is difficult that leads to life, and there are few who find it.

Matthew 7:13-14

4 Wretched man that I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!

Romans 7:24-25

4 Everything belongs to you, whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world or life or death or the present or the future. Everything belongs to you, and you belong to Christ, and Christ belongs to God.

I Corinthians 3:21-23

5 My brothers and sisters, consider it nothing but joy when you fall into all sorts of trials, because you know that the testing of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance have its perfect effect, so that you will be perfect and complete, not deficient in anything. But if anyone is deficient in wisdom, he should ask God, who gives to all generously and without reprimand, and it will be given to him. But he must ask in faith without doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed around by the wind.

James 1:2-6

6 How blessed is the one who does not follow
the advice of the wicked,
or stand in the pathway with sinners,
or sit in the assembly of scoffers!
Instead he finds pleasure in obeying the Lord’s commands;
he meditates on his commands day and night.
He is like a tree planted by flowing streams;
it yields its fruit at the proper time,
and its leaves never fall off.
He succeeds in everything he attempts.
Not so with
the wicked!
Instead they are like wind-driven chaff.
For this reason the wicked cannot withstand judgment,
nor can sinners join the assembly of the godly.

Certainly the Lord guards the way of the godly,
but the way of the wicked ends in destruction.

Psalm 1
