It was late last night when the boss came home
To a deserted mansion and a desolate throne
Servant said, "Boss, the lady's gone
She left this morning, just 'fore dawn"

"You got something to tell me, tell it to me, man
Come to the point as straight as you can"
"Old Henry Lee, chief of the clan
Came riding through the woods and took her by the hand"

The boss he laid back flat on his bed
He cursed the heat and he clutched his head
He pondered the future of his fate
To wait another day would be far too late
1

"Go fetch me my coat and my tie
And the cheapest labor that money can buy
Saddle me up my buckskin mare
If you see me go by, put up a prayer"

Well, they rode all night and they rode all day
Eastward long on the broad highway
His spirit was tired and his vision was bent
His men deserted him and onward he went
2

He came to a place where the light was dull
His forehead pounding in his skull
Heavy heart was racked with pain
Insomnia raging in his brain

Well, he threw down his helmet
and his cross-handled sword
He renounced his faith, he denied his Lord
3
Crawled on his belly, put his ear to the wall
One way or another, he'd put an end to it all

He leaned down, cut the electric wire
Stared into the flames and he snorted the fire
Peered through the darkness, caught a glimpse of the two
It was hard to tell for certain who was who

He lowered himself down on a golden chain
His nerves were quaking in every vein
His knuckles were bloody, he sucked in the air
He ran his fingers through his greasy hair

They looked at each other and their glasses clinked
One single unit inseparably linked
"Got a strange premonition there's a man close by"
"Don't worry 'bout him, he wouldn't harm a fly"

From behind the curtain the boss crossed the floor
He moved his feet and he bolted the door
Shadows hiding the lines in his face
With all the nobility of an ancient race

She turned, she was startled with a look of surprise
With a hatred that could hit the skies
"You're a reckless fool, I can see it in your eyes
To come this way was by no means wise"
4

"Get up, stand up, you greedy-lipped wench
And cover your face or suffer the consequence
You are making my heart feel sick
Put your clothes back on double quick"

"Silly boy, you think me a saint
I'll listen no more to your words of complaint
You given me nothing but the sweetest lies
Now hold your tongue and feed your eyes"
5

"I'd have given you the stars and the planets too
But what good would these things do you?
Bow the heart, if not the knee
Or never again this world you'll see"
6

"Oh, please, let not your heart be cold
This man is dearer to me than gold"
"Oh, my dear, you must be blind
He's a gutless ape with a worthless mind"

"You had your way too long with me
Now it's me who'll determine how things shall be
Try to escape," he cussed and cursed
"You'll have to try to get past me first"

"I dare not let your passion rule
You think my heart, the heart of a fool
And you, sir, you cannot deny
You made a monkey of me, what and for why?"

"I'll have no more of this insulting chat
The devil can have you, I'll see to that
Look sharp or step aside
Or in the cradle you'll wish you'd died"
7

The gun went boom and the shot rang clear
First bullet grazed his ear
Second ball went right straight in
And he bent in the middle like a twisted pin

He crawled to the corner and he lowered his head
He gripped the chair and he grabbed the bed
It would take more than needle and thread
Bleeding from the mouth, he's as good as dead

"You shot my husband down, you fiend"
"Husband, what husband, what the hell do you mean?
He was a man of strife, a man of sin
I cut him down and I'll throw him to the wind"

"Hear this," she said, with angry breath
"You too, shall meet the lord of death
It was I who brought your soul to life"
And she raised her robe and she drew out a knife

His face was hard and caked with sweat
His arms ached and his hands were wet
"You're a murderous queen and a bloody wife
If you don't mind, I'll have the knife"

"We're two of a kind and our blood runs hot
But we're no way similar in body or thought
8
All husbands are good men, as all wives know"
Then she pierced him to the heart and his blood did flow

His knees went limp and he reached for the door
His doom was sealed, he slid to the floor
He whispered in her ear, "This is all your fault
My fighting days have come to a halt"
9

She touched his lips and kissed his cheek
He tried to speak, but his breath was weak
"You died for me, now I'll die for you"
She put the blade to her heart and she ran it through

All three lovers together in a heap
Thrown into the grave forever to sleep
Funeral torches blazed away
Through the towns and the villages all night and all day

1 Rage. It does things like that. It's never healthy. But then we do all sorts of unhealthy things. We may never consider the entrance to a relationship wisely. The results end up poorly.

2 Driven by something in the flesh. We don't care what others say on the broad highway. We drive so long our hearts get harder and the vision more clouded.

3 When the Truth is rejected the denial is sealed. Deaf to understanding we drive on against the whole world if necessary. Determined to get his way in the darkness he stays.

4 The way of a fool stirs up hatred and you can become like other fools, whether in lust or revenge. In the company of fools there is no discernment, no light, only darkness.

5 Neither cares for truth. Lies abound. Lies speak through the tongue and in the conscience when the conscience is seared. There's no way up, spiraling downward.

6 It's incredible all that can be rejected when the Truth is not received. Humility never enters the mind. The heart becomes hard. The grace to humility is available, if only at the last minute. Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is the only way to God because of all He taught about Himself and all He accomplished for us by His death on the cross and through His bodily resurrection from the grave on the third day. It was all to grant us the gift of forgiveness, eternal life, and reconciliation to our Creator, God. He is also Israel's Messiah. In the Bible, God related to Israel as a faithful Husband who demonstrated unconditional loyal love to her and offered her spiritual and vast eternal riches beyond compare, in spite of her unfaithfulness.

7 The devil is real. No one can strike an irreversible deal with the devil. He's not that powerful. What is decreed will be decreed. No one can stop Him.

8 You can think you are just like them, but the thoughts in a person run very deep. This is especially true when both are living lies. Only the Spirit of Truth, the Spirit of God can create an unshakeable common bond in real love.

9 Even at the moment of irreversible doom whatever reflection arises is a futile thought and life is missed altogether. The life was a wasted fight against what, he does not know.

10 Monuments to fools are short lived. This day they can say this about you, next time they soon don't say much and it can even be veiled in a cloud of derision. Then they don't recall you or your works at all. Living for self does that and more.

THE RECORD

1 For the commandments are like a lamp,
instruction is like a light,
and rebukes of discipline
are like the road leading to life,
by keeping you from the evil woman,
from the smooth tongue of the loose woman.
Do not lust in your heart for her beauty,
and do not let her captivate
you with her alluring eyes;

for on account of a prostitute
one is brought down to a loaf of bread,
but the wife of another man
preys on your precious life.

Can a man hold fire against his chest
without burning his clothes?
Can a man walk on hot coals
without scorching his feet?
So it is with the one who has sex
with his neighbor’s wife;
no one who touches her
will escape punishment.
People do not despise a thief
when he steals
to fulfill his need
when he is hungry.
Yet if he is caught
he must repay seven times over,
he might even have to give
all the wealth of his house.
A man who commits adultery with a woman
lacks wisdom,
whoever does it destroys his own life.
He will be beaten and despised,
and his reproach will not be wiped away;
for jealousy kindles a husband’s rage,
and he will not show mercy
when he takes revenge.
He will not consider any compensation;
he will not be willing,
even if you multiply the compensation.

Proverbs 6:23-35

2 Do not answer a fool according to his folly,
lest you yourself also be like him.
Answer a fool according to his folly,
lest he be wise in his own estimation.
Like cutting off the feet or drinking violence,
so is sending a message
by the hand of a fool.

Proverbs 26:4-6

3 This saying is trustworthy:
If we died with him, we will also live with him.
If we endure, we will also reign with him.
If we deny him, he will also deny us.
If we are unfaithful, he remains faithful,
since he cannot deny himself.

II Timothy 2:11-13

4 The wicked will be thrown down in his trouble,
but the righteous have refuge
even in the threat of death.
Wisdom rests in the heart of the discerning;
it is known even in the heart of fools.

Proverbs 14:32-33

5 Say to wisdom, “You are my sister,”
and call understanding a close relative,
so that they may keep you
from the adulterous woman,
from the loose woman
who flatters you with her words.

For at the window of my house
through my window lattice
I looked out and I saw among the naive –
I discerned among the youths –
a young man who lacked wisdom.
He was passing by the street near her corner,
making his way along the road to her house
in the twilight, the evening,
in the dark of the night.
Suddenly a woman came out to meet him!
She was dressed like a prostitute
and with secret intent.
(
She is loud and rebellious,
she does not remain at home

at one time outside,
at another in the wide plazas,
and by every corner she lies in wait.)
So she grabbed him and kissed him,
and with a bold expression she said to him,
“I have fresh meat at home;
today I have fulfilled my vows!
That is why I came out to meet you,
to look for you, and I found you!
I have spread my bed
with elegant coverings,
with richly colored fabric from Egypt.
I have perfumed my bed
with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon.
Come, let’s drink deeply of lovemaking
until morning,
let’s delight ourselves
with sexual intercourse.
For my husband is not at home;
he has gone on a journey of some distance.
He has taken a bag of money with him;
he will not return until the end of the month.”

She persuaded him with persuasive words;
with her smooth talk she compelled him.

Suddenly he went after her
like an ox that goes to the slaughter,
like a stag prancing into a trapper’s snare
till an arrow pierces his liver –
like a bird hurrying into a trap,
and he does not know that it will cost him his life.
So now, sons, listen to me,
and pay attention to the words I speak.
Do not let your heart
turn aside to her ways –
do not wander into her pathways;
for she has brought down
many fatally wounded,
and all those she has slain are many.
Her house is the way to the grave,
going down to the chambers of death.

Proverbs 7:4-27

6 For your husband
is the one who made you –
the Lord who commands armies is his name.
He is your protector, the Holy One of Israel.
He is called “God of the entire earth.”

“Indeed, the Lord will call you back
like a wife who has been abandoned
and suffers from depression,
like a young wife
when she has been rejected,” says your God.
“For a short time I abandoned you,
but with great compassion I will gather you.
In a burst of anger I rejected you momentarily,
but with lasting devotion
I will have compassion on you,”
says your protector, the Lord.
As far as I am concerned,
this is like in Noah’s time
,
when I vowed that the waters of Noah’s flood
would never again cover the earth.
In the same way I have vowed
that I will not be angry at you or shout at you.
Even if the mountains are removed
and the hills displaced,
my devotion will not be removed from you,
nor will my covenant of friendship be displaced,”
says the Lord,
the one who has compassion on you.

O afflicted one, driven away,
and unconsoled!
Look, I am about to set your stones
in antimony
and I lay your foundation with lapis-lazuli.
I will make your pinnacles out of gems,
your gates out of beryl,
and your outer wall out of beautiful stones.

All your children will be followers of the Lord,
and your children will enjoy great prosperity.
You will be reestablished when I vindicate you.
You will not experience oppression;
indeed, you will not be afraid.
You will not be terrified,
for nothing frightening will come near you.
If anyone dares to challenge you,
it will not be my doing!
Whoever tries to challenge you will be defeated.
Look, I create the craftsman,
who fans the coals into a fire
and forges a weapon.
I create the destroyer so he might devastate.
No weapon forged to be used against you
will succeed;
you will refute everyone
who tries to accuse you.

This is what the Lord will do
for his servants –
I will vindicate them,” says the Lord.

Isaiah 54:5-17

The highway of the upright is to turn away from evil;
the one who guards his way safeguards his life.
Pride goes before destruction,
and a haughty spirit before a fall.

Proverbs 16:17-18

For this is the way God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world should be saved through him. The one who believes in him is not condemned. The one who does not believe has been condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the one and only Son of God. Now this is the basis for judging: that the light has come into the world and people loved the darkness rather than the light, because their deeds were evil. For everyone who does evil deeds hates the light and does not come to the light, so that their deeds will not be exposed. But the one who practices the truth comes to the light, so that it may be plainly evident that his deeds have been done in God.

John 3:16-21

7 You people are from your father the devil, and you want to do what your father desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not uphold the truth, because there is no truth in him. Whenever he lies, he speaks according to his own nature, because he is a liar and the father of lies. But because I am telling you the truth, you do not believe me. Who among you can prove me guilty of any sin? If I am telling you the truth, why don’t you believe me? The one who belongs to God listens and responds to God’s words. You don’t listen and respond, because you don’t belong to God.

John 8:44-47

By this the children of God and the children of the devil are revealed: Everyone who does not practice righteousness – the one who does not love his fellow Christian – is not of God. For this is the gospel message that you have heard from the beginning: that we should love one another, not like Cain who was of the evil one and brutally murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his deeds were evil, but his brother’s were righteous.

I John 3:10-12

8 But evil people and charlatans will go from bad to worse, deceiving others and being deceived themselves.

II Timothy 3:13

9 You study the scriptures thoroughly because you think in them you possess eternal life, and it is these same scriptures that testify about me, but you are not willing to come to me so that you may have life.

John 5:39-40

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come so that they may have life, and may have it abundantly.

John 10:10

10 Jesus said to them, “You are the ones who justify yourselves in men’s eyes, but God knows your hearts. For what is highly prized among men is utterly detestable in God’s sight.

Luke 16:15
