I can’t wait, wait for you to change your mind
It’s late, I’m trying to walk the line
Well, it’s way past midnight and there are people all around
Some on their way up, some on their way down
The air burns and I’m trying to think straight
And I don’t know how much longer I can wait

Can't Wait

Sure, the majority of the song speaks of lost romantic love. Acknowledged.

But why this part? At the start?

What we believe affects everything in our lives, including or especially relationships. He seems to be saying as much. Trying to walk the straight and narrow. Having the spiritual insight to know people all around us are going to heaven or hell. There are only those two destinations across the threshold of eternity after life on earth is through. This truth is more imminent than we realize. It's already too late for many.

Knowing this truth still continues to mean believers engage in spiritual conflict. There are voices to our heads trying to keep us from straight "sound theology" thinking by what the Bible, handled accurately, really says. (Theology just means the
knowledge of God.)

We believers long to have this battle end, and it will when Christ returns for us or we go to be with him in heaven at physical death. We need to live as though either could happen any day. A threatening thing? No. It's our blessed hope. Because Jesus paid it all for us on the cross in dying for all of our sins once and for all time, and because of his bodily resurrection from the grave, God is no longer against us. We have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. What a motivator to live for him every day!

THE RECORD

So teach us to consider our mortality,
so that we might live wisely.

Psalm 90:12

“Enter through the narrow gate, because the gate is wide and the way is spacious that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it. But the gate is narrow and the way is difficult that leads to life, and there are few who find it.”

“Watch out for false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are voracious wolves. You will recognize them by their fruit.

Matthew 7:13-16

One of the criminals who was hanging there railed at him, saying, “Aren’t you the Christ? Save yourself and us!” But the other rebuked him, saying, “Don’t you fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? And we rightly so, for we are getting what we deserve for what we did, but this man has done nothing wrong.” Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come in your kingdom.” And Jesus said to him, “I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise.”

Luke 23:39-43

For the payoff of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 6:23

For there is no distinction between the Jew and the Greek, for the same Lord is Lord of all, who richly blesses all who call on him. For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.

How are they to call on one they have not believed in? And how are they to believe in one they have not heard of? And how are they to hear without someone preaching to them? And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, How timely is the arrival of those who proclaim the good news.” But not all have obeyed the good news, for Isaiah says, Lord, who has believed our report?” Consequently faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes through the preached word of Christ.

Romans 10:12-17

Therefore we are always full of courage, and we know that as long as we are alive here on earth we are absent from the Lord – for we live by faith, not by sight. Thus we are full of courage and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord. So then whether we are alive or away, we make it our ambition to please him. For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may be paid back according to what he has done while in the body, whether good or evil.

Therefore, because we know the fear of the Lord, we try to persuade people, but we are well known to God, and I hope we are well known to your consciences too.

II Corinthians 5:6-11

We also urge you not to receive the grace of God in vain. For he says, I heard you at the acceptable time, and in the day of salvation I helped you.” Look, now is the acceptable time; look, now is the day of salvation!

II Corinthians 6:1-2

For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all people. It trains us to reject godless ways and worldly desires and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, as we wait for the happy fulfillment of our hope in the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ. He gave himself for us to set us free from every kind of lawlessness and to purify for himself a people who are truly his, who are eager to do good. So communicate these things with the sort of exhortation or rebuke that carries full authority. Don’t let anyone look down on you.

Titus 2:11-15

If anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, that person was thrown into the lake of fire.

Revelation 20:15

Blessed are those who wash their robes so they can have access to the tree of life and can enter into the city by the gates.

And the Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” And let the one who hears say: “Come!” And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who wants it take the water of life free of charge.

Revelation 22:14, 17
