The Cuckoo is a pretty bird, she warbles as she flies
I’m preachin’ the Word of God
I’m puttin’ out your eyes

High Water

Sure, the song tells a tale of imminent threat. The water is rising. Many of the lines in the song seem to come out of nowhere; or out of context. It is uncertain who is meant to be saying what. But then all of a sudden the last two of these three lines appear that do seem to go together. They should only be read in their own immediate context. Let them stand by themselves.

So then, what is it about the Word of God that can put out someone's eyes? When you are confronted by Truth you had better hear, it can make your eyes do things in a visceral way. They can smart, squint, tear up, or turn red. It is obvious from his words something worse can happen. But that's just an effect from somewhere else.

Repetition helps us remember things. One thing for sure, the next time I see or hear a Cuckoo Clock, or the pretty bird itself, or any bird that warbles, you know, with some sort of repetitious sound or maneuver, it may remind me of the last two lines above. And that will be all good, any time the Word of God and what it does to people is recalled.

THE RECORD

Jesus said, “For judgment I have come into this world, so that those who do not see may gain their sight, and the ones who see may become blind.”

Some of the Pharisees who were with him heard this and asked him, “We are not blind too, are we?” Jesus replied, “If you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin, but now because you claim that you can see, your guilt remains.”

John 9:39-41

Although Jesus had performed so many miraculous signs before them, they still refused to believe in him, so that the word of Isaiah the prophet would be fulfilled. He said,
Lord, who has believed our message,
and to whom has the arm of the Lord
been revealed?
For this reason they could not believe, because again Isaiah said,
He has blinded their eyes
and hardened their heart,
so that they would not see with their eyes
and understand with their heart,
and turn to me,
and I would heal them.

John 12:37-40

And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Ephesians 6:17

For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any double-edged sword, piercing even to the point of dividing soul from spirit, and joints from marrow; it is able to judge the desires and thoughts of the heart. And no creature is hidden from God, but everything is naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must render an account.

Hebrews 4:12-13
